Discussion: Basics of WordPress – A Content Management System
What is WordPress?
WordPress is an open source Content Management System (CMS) that can store large amounts of data and make it available to the world to help sell products and services. It helps makes websites more appealing through speed to website creation and design.
Why use WordPress?
WordPress is a great CMS that makes website building more flexible. Instead of having to learn a new coding language, we are able to use what’s already built into the system. The time to create a website is drastically cut down to weeks.
Fun fact: Nearly 37% of the websites on the internet are built on WordPress.
Who is WordPress for?
WordPress is ideal for users who are fairly technical, for example anyone who has experience with web design languages such as HTML & CSS. Outside of this space, people with ample amounts of time will be able to set up WordPress themselves with all the tutorials on the internet. Web designers & developers are the biggest users of WordPress.
Who is WordPress not for?
WordPress is not be for everyone. A business owner who does not have a lot of time on their hands may find themselves frustrated with trying to maintain and manage WordPress. It needs to be updated very often to make sure there are no security issues. It may not be for someone looking to get a quick website.
How to get it?
WordPress has two different versions. The wordpress.com version is essentially managed for the user, meaning security and other pitfalls are something you don’t have to worry about as much. You will still need to make sure plugins are updated regularly. Very easy to get started on WordPress.com for free, but there are paid versions with more features.
The wordpress.org version of WordPress is a free, fully open-sourced platform used mostly by designers and developers. Users have to manage this themselves. WordPress can be manually installed, but not recommended. Most website hosting providers have auto-installers that will install WordPress for you.
Themes, Plugins & Posts/Pages
A theme is the look and feel of a WordPress website. It gives the view of everything that you and your customers can see when you go to your website. There are free themes, but buying one from a reputable source is recommended to avoid any security issues. WpAstra.com is a great theme provider.
Plugins are additional codes that can be put into WordPress to make the design or functionality of website to be more interesting. There are lots of plugins from backing up your WordPress site, to improving your SEO, to adding additional views to the look of your site.
Posts & Pages are both similar. Posts are in the blog section of your website. Posts are categorized and meant to be added regularly. Pages, on the other hand, are updated less often (ie. static pages) such as home page, cart, about and checkout pages.

What is the difference between the two themes? Astra & Divi? Which one is better?
They are both very common in the WordPress space and are reputable. We prefer Astra because it has a very low file size, which leads to faster load times and it also gives more options on what you are doing. If you have Divi, there’s no need to change it unless you are running into issues. Different designers and developers have their tool of preference.
Is it very complicated to change from Divi to Astra?
The answer is probably yes. When you are changing a theme, the code layer of the theme, whether Astra or Divi, gives you the basics of what the front end looks like. When you change from Divi to Astra, the layout will change. There are happy mediums in between, for example you can change to Astra, then you can add a theme to it and based on the content already present, it may not be as much work. This all depends on what you had before and what you’re choosing next. A designer will most likely be able to do this work much quicker than anyone who doesn’t have experience in it.
What is the best way to save a backup of your website?
It depends on the hosting provider that you have. A good web hosting provider will have daily backups of your site. We recommend SiteGround (affiliate) for most of our clients. You usually pay $20-30/month. With SiteGround you have the option to back up your website regularly and the data is kept for 2-4 weeks.
Another option you may look into is UpdraftPlus. It’s an excellent backup option for your WordPress website. You can download and store this in different locations as well, such as your computer or Google Drive.
If I wanted to change hosting providers, is there a way to transfer my site / data?
Yes, you can transfer your existing WordPress website into another hosting. There are premium plugins and hosting specific plugins that let you do that. For example if your WordPress is on GoDaddy, and you want to put it on SiteGround, there’s a tool that you install and the work is done for you. The end result should be more or less the same as it was. Please make sure you check everything on your website after the transfer is done. Reach out to your new hosting support or your web developer / designer if you need help.
